Caltech students: new minimum stipend

Filed under: Studies — paulcook @ 4:54 pm

A quick information note for Caltech students who may not have read the newsletter: the GSC budget newsletter announces that the GSC request for a minimum stipend level for all students, regardless of support source, has been approved by the Graduate Studies Committee, and will be recommended to all division chairs.

I’m really excited, since the figure they mention will be a BIG increase for me. But it’s worth checking, come next year, that your stipend is up to the minimum — and if not, well, perhaps some complaining might be in order.

  1. Glad to see that they’re going forward with recommending that. In all honesty, I feel that amount is still a couple k below what it should be for southern california, particularly with the big rent hike on campus for next year. But on the other hand, I know there are departments that fall well below their recommendation. For Caltech to remain competitive, we’ve got to offer decent money that takes into account the cost of living. If it comes down to picking either the #1 school or picking the #5 school and being able to pay off student loans a couple years sooner, then there are a lot of good students that will pass up Caltech.
