I am so glad that everything worked out well! I was extremely relieved when I got your message saying that you are going on the JFK JNB flight. I cannot imagine having to go thru LHR/AMS/CDG/FRA to go to South Africa. Have fun at home!

Looking back, it probably would have been a good idea to utilize some sort of protection before I connected my laptop.

Sorry to hear about your router!

UPDATE: I made it to Johannesburg without any problem. To celebrate, I plugged in the wireless router I brought with me, to set up wireless here at home. Unfortunately, I forgot to check the voltage rating first, so it now seems I fried it. Perhaps some sleep first would have been in order.

Adam: standing is well and good, until you have an 11 hour layover. Then a little sitting is useful. Also, these network ports often require payment -- at least the ones I've seen so far.

But leaving unconnected network ports lying around? That's a little nasty.

One time when searching for a power outlet at an airport, I actually found a data port. This made me really excited because there didn't appear to be any wireless. Unfortunately, it wasn't activated. But it was still kind of neat.

So, I've seen laptop recharging stations in many airports. What this usually consists of is a long workbench type structure upon which laptops can be placed while the user stands. There are electrical outlets and often either ethernet ports or wireless access available. You might keep an eye out for these.

Such a laptop station has the added benefit that the user has to stand. Yes, I said "benefit". For one, such as yourself, who is very tired, the best way to keep from falling asleep is to exercise or at the very least keep standing up. As soon as you sit down, you're a goner, unless you manage to find a particularly uncomfortable seat, or perhaps if you have uncommon amounts of willpower.
