We parked at the blocked off gate to Mt. Lee Drive and took the front side of the hill. After walking up a wash out and stepping over a matted down fence (clearly others have been there before) we were able to touch the D and take pictures. I knew it was "illegal" to do this and I later heard rumors that there were ground sensors and that if they caught you it was 1 year in jail. We were up there for about 2 hours on a Sunday morning. I did notice several cameras and loudspeakers on the sign, suggesting that if they caught you they could yell at you. That did not happen but we were able to hang out and enjoy the breath taking views of Los Angeles with a gigantic iPod commercial in the middle of it. So what is the real deal with the laws up there? But got some photos of the letters, at least! It's interesting that there are tons of microwave communication dishes there too, which one would assume would really lead to problems if destroyed, but it's the sign that has all the cameras trained on it.
