Me and two of my friends hiked up to the Hollywood sign on a Sunday morning at 5 AM because we wanted to see the sunrise on LA and touch the D. We parked at the blocked off gate to Mt. Lee Drive and took the front side of the hill. After walking up a wash out and stepping over a matted down fence (clearly others have been there before) we were able to touch the D and take pictures. I knew it was "illegal" to do this and I later heard rumors that there were ground sensors and that if they caught you it was 1 year in jail. We were up there for about 2 hours on a Sunday morning. I did notice several cameras and loudspeakers on the sign, suggesting that if they caught you they could yell at you. That did not happen but we were able to hang out and enjoy the breath taking views of Los Angeles with a gigantic iPod commercial in the middle of it. So what is the real deal with the laws up there?

Hi Paul,

Great site. Kinda disturbing to read about Segway tours, though....

Just have to say this: I'll bet that 9 out of 10 people on the Segways really could hike it, and SHOULD hike it, but instead are spending money to not sweat one bead. This great lazy country of ours, where people would spend $3000 on a Segway when their own two feet or better yet the bicycle (the original no-emission vehicle) costs less than 1/10th to own....

Hi Paul,
Actually, Telkom's adsl (and home dsl) prices have come down quite a bit! And competition may drive it even further down soon ;)
Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks for the visit! It looks like you have some good ideas, I hope it goes well. There's a lot of potential for that sort of thing in Johannesburg, I think, despite the best efforts of Telkom to price fast internet access out of the reach of all but a few.

I realize that there might not be enough money in the cities of Los Angeles and Hollywood, or in the state of California, to pay for a picnic table, but the least they could have given us is a park bench, or some folding chairs, or a ledge to sit on other than the bare ground. But otherwise, it was indeed a thoroughly enjoyable hike. Especially so now that my legs have healed. For a while I had sore muscles whose existence I had been previously unaware of.

One other thing. When did you put in this "Live Preview" thing? I hate to say it, but I find it slightly annoying. It wouldn't be so bad if it weren't constantly a few characters behind me in my typing. Was it so much trouble before to simply hit the "Preview" button?

Unfortunately, no -- the fences and cameras and stuff keep you too far away. But got some photos of the letters, at least!

It's interesting that there are tons of microwave communication dishes there too, which one would assume would really lead to problems if destroyed, but it's the sign that has all the cameras trained on it. Amazing what being famous does to some simple metal cutouts!
